Betty J. Stevens – Obituary

Betty J. Stevens, 83, of Huntsville, passed away Tuesday. Betty was born in 1934 in Yankton, S.D. and had one older brother, Larry. The family moved to Omaha, NE, where Betty attended and graduated from St. Mary High School in 1952.

She trained as a ballroom dance instructor and married Mark E. Stevens, a former army air force lieutenant and instructor pilot during WW II. They taught dance together for years, owning and operating Arthur Murray studios in Omaha and later in Florida. They opened a restaurant in Omaha named The Porpoise Place, featuring a live dolphin.

In the 1970’s they relocated to Port St. Lucie, FL and spent over 40 years working side by side as real estate brokers and building contractors.

During retirement they spent much of their time in Huntsville, AL to be with their daughter, Laura, and her husband, Jim Goldbach, and their two grandchildren, Tyler and Crystal. She is also survived by a niece, nephews, cousins and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Ruth Hanson, brother, Larry D. Hanson; and her husband, Mark E. Stevens.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 3 at Maple Hill Cemetery with Father Michael Mac Mahon officiating.
