Ray Douglas Mitchell, Sr, 87, was called to be with his Lord, Nov. 25, 2017. Born Feb. 27, 1930, in Decatur to Alva Lee and Rosa Laura Mitchell. Ray was a graduate of Riverside High School, serving in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict, and working in finance and banking upon discharge, retiring as an officer from Regions Bank.

Ray married Lucene McRight in June of 1950, followed by the birth of two children, Ray Douglas Mitchell Jr. (Cincinnati) and Laura Lee Mitchell Roden (deceased). In addition to Lucy and Doug, he is survived by Doug’s wife, Kathleen, and Lee’s husband, Darrell. His grandchildren are Ian and Emily Mitchell (Cincinnati), Devin and Callie Mitchell (Jerusalem, Israel), Logan Mitchell (Cincinnati), Erin Mitchell (Cincinnati), Micah and Mandy Roden (Tallahassee). The great-grandchildren are Devin, Claire and Owen Mitchell, Aviel, Lydia and Eliora Mitchell, Graham Simminger, and Mason, McKinley and Marshall Roden.

Ray spoke of many events that were important to him, most of all his marriage to Lucy. They were sweet and loyal in their love, always inseparable. He so enjoyed his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His church, Austinville United Methodist, was a place where he was a lifetime member, serving in various capacities for much of his adult life. Two very special events for him were his involvement in the Walk to Emmaus, the Kairo, his Emmaus prayer group and his trip to Israel.

Ray was known and loved by many as one who consistently reached out to those in need, willing to go the extra mile for anyone and stepping in to assist in difficult times. His friendships were numerous and long-standing. Even in his later years, he remembered individuals, families and their special circumstances. He sought to and was able to make a difference in so many lives and, as a result, the lives of many whom he never met.

Christian services will be held at Austinville United Methodist, Lamar Street, on Saturday with visitation at 10 a.m., celebration of his life at 11 a.m., and burial afterward in Roselawn Cemetery on Danville Road. A reception lunch will follow at Austinville at approximately 1 p.m. Roselawn Funeral Home is directing.

If you would like to make donations in his memory, please make them to Austinville United Methodist Church.

“Well done, good and faithful servant…Come and enter into your Master’s joy.” Matthew 25
