A Strawberry…Not A Berry….Really?

Pumpkins, watermelons, avocados and bananas are all berries.   Strawberries, raspberries and blackberries are not berries at all.

The botanical definition of a berry is a fleshy fruit produced from a single flower and containing one ovary. Grapes and eggplants are two common examples.

The seeds are usually embedded in the fleshy interior of the ovary, but there are some non-fleshy exceptions, such as peppers, that have air rather than pulp around their seeds.

Strawberries, on the other hand, are known as “accessory fruits,” he surrounding flesh around the seed isn’t derived from the fruit’s ovaries but from the receptacle in which the ovaries are found. When fully developed, these aggregates have merged together into one single fruit. Hows that for fruitception?
