Susan Joy Posey Hunnicutt, 76, of Florence, Alabama, passed away on November 18 at Huntsville Hospital following surgery after a long battle with cancer.

She was preceded in death by her parents Melvin Clarence Posey, Sr. and Susan Elizabeth Longshore Posey.

Susan is survived by her husband of 54 years, Richard Alan Hunnicutt of Florence, brothers Melvin Clarence (Chip) Posey, Jr., of Florence and Richard Longshore (Dick) Posey of Nashville and his wife Nancy, daughter Amy Hunnicutt Presley and her husband Stacey of Florence, son David Alan Hunnicutt of Huntsville,  and granddaughter Susan Elizabeth Presley. She was also very proud of her five nieces, three nephews, and their families.

Susan and her future husband Richard graduated from Mars Hill Bible School in 1959. They attended David Lipscomb College (now Lipscomb University) in Nashville, Tennessee, graduating in 1963. Susan taught elementary school at Mars Hill Bible School from 1979 until 2000.  While she spent most of those years teaching fourth grade, she taught every grade from first to sixth.

She was a lifelong member of Sherrod Avenue Church of Christ. Susan taught Sunday school, and Richard served as a deacon, for many years. They participated in a mission trip to Ireland during the turbulent late sixties.

After retirement, she worked as a volunteer for the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library because of her belief in the importance of reading. She also volunteered at ECM Hospital and worked with Meals on Wheels. Susan and Richard enjoyed traveling and participating in Elder Hostel through Lipscomb University.

A memorial service will be held at the chapel of Greenview Memorial in Florence on Tuesday at 2:00 o’clock, following a visitation period from 11:00 to 2:00.

Dr. Kenny Barfield and Scotty Sparks will officiate; nephews and close friends will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Mars Hill Bible School.
