Lauderdale County Deputy Involved In Early Morning Shooting In Elgin

ELGIN-The Florence Police are investigating an officer involved shooting that took place on Wednesday morning, November 8 at around 3:00 AM at Highway 72 and Alabama 101 in Elgin.

Sheriff Rick Singleton says the deputies were alerted to a burglary in Florence early this morning. They noticed a car that matched the description around 3:00 a.m., and initiated a traffic stop. Singleton says three deputies in two patrol cars stopped the vehicle; one in front and one behind. He says when one of the deputies approached the car, the driver put the car in reverse and rammed the patrol car

parked behind. Singleton says the deputy in front shot the suspected burglar as well as the tires of the vehicle.

Authorities say that Sharmarie Crayton, 27 of Tennessee, Paul Hinkle, 29, of  Birmingham; and Deandre Perry, 26, of Birmingham, have all been charged with six counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle

and first-degree theft of property.   They are each being held on a $20,000 bond.

Crayton was shot by a sheriff’s deputy after deputies tried to stop the truck they were driving. Crayton was shot in the shoulder and was treated and released from the hospital.

The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office has not released the name of the deputy involved in the shooting.  The Sheriff’s Department did say the deputy was not injured.

The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office has asked Florence Police to investigate the shooting.
