Mary Lynden “Lyn” Schmidt, 79, passed from her earthly life on Sunday, October 29, 2017, at Mitchell Center on the Traceway campus. Lyn was born December 9, 1937, in Port Huron, Michigan, to Mary and John Ross. Lyn married her husband, Howard Scmidt, in 1956 in Port Huron, and they reared their children there until the family moved to Fulton, MS, in the fall of 1969. Lyn was a homemaker while her children were in school, but she enjoyed various jobs out of the home after they were grown. She was a very active Girl Scout leader for many years and enjoyed helping with reading programs at the library and grammar school as well as traveling with her husband in the Lion’s Club. Lyn used her God-given talents to sing in the choir, play the hand bells in her church, and decorate the Sunday school halls and bulletin boards for the many children who passed through them over the years. She was a member of the Fulton United Methodist Church; and after her move to Tupelo in 2005, she joined the Wesley United Methodist Church on Main Street. Lyn enjoyed her final years in Tupelo at Traceway Retirement Community where she made many new friends.

She is survived by her son, Randy (Karen Crane) Schmidt, of Texarkana, TX, and her daughter, Sara Schmidt of Tupelo, MS. She had two granddaughters, Katheryn Schmidt of Texarkana, TX, and Emily (Clint) Dowell of Charlotte, NC; one grandson, Josh Head of San Diego, CA; and one great-grandson, Brody Norwood of Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband of over forty years, Howard, in 1999; her parents, Mary and John Ross; her two brothers, Bill Ross and Jim Ross, all of Michigan; her sister, Janet Celnar Ross of Fulton; and one great-grandson, Blake Norwood of Texas.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held for Lyn at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 31, at Wesley United Methodist Church, West Main Street, Tupelo, with the Rev. Roger Puhr officiating. She will be buried next to her beloved Howard at Harden’s Chapel Cemetery in Fulton. McNeece-Morris Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

Her Wesley Sunday school class will serve as honorary pallbearers as well as long-time friends, Stuart Heering of Fulton and Jill Beshell of Traceway.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to her church, Wesley United Methodist Church, the Lion’s Club, or SMA Foundation (Blake’s Journey).

The family wishes to offer special thanks to her caregivers at Traceway, the sitters, and the Kindred therapists and hospice staff who were so kind over the months.
