ATHENS-Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson released a statement concerning the arrest of a suspect wanted for several warrants including burglary 1st:

“Yesterday afternoon our department arrested Kenny W Gatlin on warrants for burglary 1st degree, unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle, domestic violence menacing with a gun and possession of a controlled substance.

On September 8, 2017 our department was called to the 18000 block of North Jefferson Street. The caller told our dispatcher that Gatlin had broken into their home. They went on to say Gatlin had a pistol that they had taken it away from him and were holding him at gun point.

When Sgt. Erick White and Lt. Dusty Meadows arrived they were met in the driveway by a female. She handed the officers a handgun and told them Gatlin was in the house. When officers entered the house the home owner was holding a firearm on Gatlin. Gatlin was in the floor bleeding from his arm.

Officers secured all weapons and called for an ambulance then started first aid till the ambulance could arrive.

Investigation of the scene and from talking with the victims revealed Gatlin came to the residence to see his wife and small child which were living with her parents due to previous problems with Gatlin.

Once at the residence Gatlin went into one of the vehicles in the yard and took a set of keys. He was then able to unlock the back and enter the residence. He went to his wife’s bedroom and at some point pulled a pistol out and threatened to kill her if she yelled for help. Her mother heard something and woke her husband to see what was going on.

When he entered the bedroom he pulled his pistol on Gatlin and ordered him away from the bedroom. In the process of going to the living area there was a scuffle and Gatlin tried to get his pistol from his pants. The victims were able to get the gun away from Gatlin at that time. Gatlin ran thru the house into a room and slammed the door. The home owner at some time fired 2 shots both missing Gatlin. Once in the room Gatlin broke a window out with his arm and cut an artery.

Gatlin was transported to Athens Limestone Hospital and later transferred to Huntsville Hospital.

Our department was not aware that Gatlin had been released till yesterday morning when we received a call from a person saying Gatlin was driving on Elm Street and had pointed a pistol at him. Our department along with help from the Limestone County Sheriff’s Department located Gatlin on Pamela Drive. He was taken into custody without incident. Gatlin was transported to the police department where investigators interviewed him and later arrested him on the warrants.

He was booked at the police department and transported to the county jail.”
