Virginia Lee Newton Carden – Obituary

Virginia Lee Newton Carden was born May 6, 1954 to Mr. Robert C. Newton & Mrs. Alice Elizabeth Groover Newton.
Ginny graduated from Hartselle High School (MCHS) in 1972. She then attended and graduated from Jacksonville State University with both a B.S. and a M.A. in Elementary Education and Special Education in 1976 and 1977 respectively.

She taught  in Calhoun county, Alabama for 3 years before returning to Hartselle to teach at F.E. Burleson Elementary, the elementary school where she attended as a child. There she taught special education for several years, Fourth Grade and Third Grade for a total of 35 years. The last few years of her teaching career she was a Title I teacher at Burleson. She retired from teaching in 2014 with 38 years in education.

After retirement, Ginny was still active at Burleson as a substitute teacher as well as working with the extended day program.

Ginny was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Hartselle.

Ginny’s happiest times were with her family. She loved her grandchildren and was very active in their lives. She also loved scrapbooking, photography, and travel. The Smoky Mountains brought her great joy and she went often.

Ginny’s infectious love and laughter delighted many friends who will miss her daily. She always had a smile for anyone around her. She was truly a precious jewel in so many people’s lives.

Ginny passed away October 11, 2017, at Grandview Medical Center after complications from heart surgery. Ginny was preceded in death by her husband, Mark Carden, and her parents.

Her survivors include: daughter-Marissa Carden; sons-Wesley (Haley) Sandefer and Kelly Sandefer; two stepsons-Matthew and Andrew Carden; grandchildren-Sydney, Blake, and Khloe; and her brothers-John (Sam) and Bob Newton (Leticia).

Funeral arrangements for Ginny are Saturday, October 14, 2017 at First United Methodist Church. Funeral Service will be at 4:00 pm with Dr. Steve Bell officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. The Visitation will be from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM at the Church. Burial will be in the Hartselle Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

Honorary pallbearers are Ginny’s teaching associates at Burleson Elementary.

In lieu of flowers: you can send a donation to F. E. Burleson Elementary, where the money will be used to honor Ginny in some of the school’s ongoing school projects.
