ATHENS-It’s a great time to fall in love with Athens. Here is a list of some of our October events:
Oct. 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Jimmy Gill Park and nearby neighborhoods
A walk for breast cancer awareness that starts at Jimmy Gill Park, goes through neighborhoods on Hine Street and back to the park.
Oct. 15-21
Display the Power of Pink this week as you support those who have or are fighting breast cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Mayor Ronnie Marks has proclaimed this as Paint the Town Pink Week to encourage citizens to learn about prevention, treatment, and support. Share your pink photos with Holly Hollman at hhollman@athensal.us for use on social media and in the news media.
Oct. 18 at 11:45 a.m. at the Limestone County Event Center
Hosted by Athens-Limestone Hospital Foundation as a fundraiser for its Pink Elephant Program related to breast cancer. Guest speaker is Suzanne Brooks. Tickets are $30 and include lunch. Contact Leah Beth McNutt at leahmc@alhnet.org.
Judge James E. Horton Jr. Monument Dedication
Oct. 19 at 2 p.m., west side of the Limestone County Courthouse
The Judge Horton Monument Committee and Horton’s family will unveil the 400-pound bronze statue of Judge Horton, which will be installed on a limestone base at the west entrance to commemorate his courageous decision in the re-trial of Scottsboro Boys defendant Haywood Patterson. The public is welcome. A reception will follow in the Horton courtroom.
Oct. 20 from 6-9 p.m. at High Cotton Arts
A fundraiser for Athens Arts League. This event incorporates aspects of the German festival Oktoberfest and highlights local art opportunities. Proceeds support High Cotton Arts, Scout Music House and various art education programs for the schools, DHR foster children, and Boys and Girls Club. Cost is $50 per person. Include German food and beverages, music by The Little German Band of Huntsville, a beer stein exhibit, and art auction. Athens High School Homecoming Parade
Oct. 20 at 3 p.m. in Downtown Athens
Parade will start at Athens High, go west on Hobbs Street, go around The Square, and go south on Jefferson Street to the Hometown Grocery lot.
Oct. 24-28 in Downtown Athens
There are various schedules and activities, including a local storytellers’ competition. Enjoy life, legends and lies under the big top in historic Downtown Athens. Go online at http://www.athensstorytellingfestival.com/ for a list of storytellers, schedules and tickets.
Apple Annie 5K Charity Fundraiser
Oct. 28 at 7:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. in Downtown Athens
Starts on The Square and goes west of The Square on Hine, West Hobbs, Bullington, Washington, Marion and Green. Will have Marion Street blocked until 11 a.m. for event area. To register go to ItsYourRace.com.
