MISSISSIPPI and ALABAMA – The Natchez Trace Parkway (Parkway) is making preparations to handle downed trees and road closures resulting from high winds and rain associated with Tropical Storm Nate. The storm is expected to strike the Gulf Coast and travel through Mississippi on late Saturday and into northern Alabama and central Tennessee late Saturday and early Sunday morning.

“Drivers should avoid the Parkway completely and take alternate routes during the storm,” said Chief Ranger Sarah Davis. “If they must take the Parkway, they should be aware of their surroundings and reduce driving speeds.”  Parkway maintenance crews and law enforcement rangers will respond to downed trees and other obstacles as soon as it is safe to do so. “Our staff is ready to respond and open the roadway, but will not go out during the storm until we can be assured of their safety,” added Chief of Maintenance Barry Boyd.

If you do need to travel the Parkway and find a downed tree, please call the Parkway Emergency Line at 1-800-300-PARK (7275).  Let the dispatcher know the closest milepost or major road crossing, as that will decrease the response time and give the crews a better idea of how to open the road more quickly.
