Merlin Arthur Shuey – Obituary

Merlin Arthur Shuey, 81 passed away peacefully Friday, Sept. 22, 2017, and is now with God. Merlin was born Sept. 6, 1936, to John and Dorothy (Daniels) Shuey in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Waynesboro High School, received a bachelor degree in engineering from Drexel University where he was also in the ROTC, a master’s in aerospace engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and an MBA from the University of Connecticut.

Merlin attended church in many locations as part of his travels and was part of the United Congregational Church of Christ.

Merlin worked for Hamilton Standard UTC for 40 years as an aerospace engineer and space and sea marketer. He worked on various projects including the Gemini, Mercury, and Apollo programs, spacesuits, life support systems, the Space Shuttle, and the International Space Station. After his retirement, he continued to enjoyed time with his family and traveling.

Merlin is survived by his wife, Jewel (Grissom) Shuey; sister, Lorraine Shuey; daughter, Dawn (Shuey) Luce and Chris; son, Randall and Manuela; son, Raymon and Tammy; mother of his children, Susan (Wetmore) Henry; stepdaughters, Belynda (Barnes) Taylor, Beth (Barnes) Ables, and Jack and April Christina Barnes-Russell; stepbrothers, Edward Shuey and Sandy, Clyde Shuey and Pat, and Phillip Zink and Suzie; grandchildren, Chelsea, Evan, Aidan, Kayla, Alexa, Johnathan, Brian, Daniel, Lauren, and Mackyncie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Merlin was preceded in death by his parents and a stepmother, Esther (Reese) Shuey.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 29, 2017, at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pine Grove, Pennsylvania, at 2 p.m., with burial following at St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut, the Cancer Research Institute, or a food pantry of your choice.
