SHEFFIELD – Suffering complications from surgery, long time resident and former city mayor, Billy Don Anderson passed away Sunday afternoon. It was unexpected and his passing has shocked and saddened many people throughout Northwest Alabama.

Anderson, who, in the 1950’s, attended Florence State College (now The University of North Alabama), was originally from Athens, Alabama. However, Sheffield was his adopted home. Anderson did a tour of duty in the Unites States Coast Guard and after college, started his career as a member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He returned to the Shoals to take a position at Sheffield Federal Savings and Loan Association. He ascended to President of the institution and shepherded it into Valley Federal Savings Bank in the 1980’s. He was an influential leader in many civic organizations, including The Shoals Chamber of Commerce, The United Way, The Shoals Entrepreneurial Center, The University of North Alabama and many more public service organizations.
