Harris Stanton Burns Jr., age 81, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017.

Harris was a long time resident of Florence and the son of the late Harris S. Burns Sr. and Elizabeth LeMay Burns. He attended Florence city schools and graduated from Coffee High School, class of 1954. He attended Florence State College, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, and graduated from Auburn University with a degree in business administration. Harris was a member of Sigma Nu Social Fraternity and Coach Wilber Hutsel’s Varsity Track team while at Auburn.

Mr. Burns is survived by his wife, Juliette Burns; sons, Harris Burns III (Jada) and Taylor Ruffin Burns; and three grandchildren, Adison Taylor Burns, Harris Burns IV, and Payten Bailey Burns; and sister, Anna Burns Dyer.

He was a lifetime member of Florence First United Methodist Church having served on the administrative board and was a member of the men’s Bible class.

Mr. Burns served six years in the United States Army Reserves. He was a past member of Rotary International (Livermore, California), senior member of the Atlanta Athletic Club (Duluth, Georgia), member of The Good Ol’ Boys Association (Florence), and served on the Auburn University Legislative Committee representing Lauderdale County.

Visitation will be held at Spry-Williams Funeral Home on Friday, Sept. 15, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. A celebration of life will follow at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with speakers Harris S. (Bill) Burns III, Taylor R. Burns, and Winfrey Sanderson officiating. Burial will be at Sheffield Oakwood Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the men’s Bible class and the Good Ol’ Boys Association of Florence. You may sign the guest register at sprywilliams.com.
