Mary Alice Young – Obituary

Mary Alice Young, 91, of Florence, passed away on Friday, September 8, 2017 at Mitchell Hollingsworth Nursing Home.  Miss Young was a lifelong resident of the Oakland Community, in Lauderdale County. She was a member of the Oakland Methodist Church.

Miss Young spent 40 years of dedicated service to the students at Central Elementary School. She was beloved by the children who were blessed to have her as their teacher.  Mary Alice was awarded Outstanding Educator of the Year by the Lauderdale County Teacher’s Association and Central High School Alumnus of the year.  Mary Alice had a quick wit, kind spirit, and the ability to make everyone around her feel appreciated. She loved God, family, community and working in her yard.

Visitation will be 1-4 p.m., Sunday, September 10, 2017 at Greenview Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 4 p.m. in Greenview Memorial Chapel with Harry Wallace and Bert Bretherick officiating.  Burial will follow in Wesley Chapel Church Cemetery.

Mary Alice was preceded in death by her father, Pugh A. Young and her mother, Cora Whitten Young.

She is survived by a host of family and friends.

Serving as pallbearers will be Dr. Robert Mann, Dr. John Mann, Andy Mann, Whitt Jackson, Danny Wylie and Ryan Smith.

A special thank you is given to Dr. Robert Mann for exceptional care, special friends for visits, cards, and calls, and the compassionate caregivers who sat with her and became a special part of her family.  Thank you to the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department and Crossroads Market for their help and concern.
