George Marshall VanSant – Obituary

George Marshall VanSant, 90, of Tuscumbia, died Sept. 2, 2017. His memorial service will be at Trinity Episcopal Church, Florence on Wednesday, September 6th. Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Parrish Hall with the service at 1 p.m.

Mr. VanSant was born in Hinton, West Virginia. His parents were Dr. and Mrs. William Lawrence VanSant Sr. His wife, Betty Hurston VanSant and his brother, William Lawrence VanSant, Jr. preceded him in death.

He is survived by his sister, Carolyn Hewlett VanSant, Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and his daughters, Evelyn VanSant Mauldin (Fennel), Leighton, Martha VanSant Zuelke, Tuscumbia, and Mary Marshall VanSant, Tuscumbia; and two granddaughters, Elizabeth Lloyd Zuelke, Memphis, Tennessee and Mary Hurston Zuelke, Spartanburg, South Carolina.

George attended Marshall University in West Virginia and Georgia Technical Institute where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He served in the Army during World War II. After graduation from Georgia Tech, he traveled with the Army Chemical Corps. which included the Muscle Shoals area. Because of the outdoor opportunities available in the Shoals, he chose this area to live. He was an avid bird hunter and fisherman, an enthusiastic member of many tennis groups, an outspoken member of several golf foursomes, and a masterful croquet player.

He was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church for over 60 years as well as a member of the Tuscumbia Civitan Club. He was also a farmer, an oil distributor, and founding partner in VanSant Insurance Agency, a problem solver, deep thinker, and an accomplished practical joker.

He leaves behind three confident daughters and two granddaughters who he taught to take what they do seriously but never to take themselves too seriously.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Francis Fund, Trinity Episcopal Church, Florence, Alabama, or your favorite charity.

Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia assisted the family with arrangements.
