Elizabeth S. McGuire – Obituary

Mrs. Elizabeth S. McGuire was born on Dec. 18, 1925, in Florence, Alabama to the late Mr. and Mrs. Leamon Butler. She departed this life on Aug. 25, 2017, at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital, Florence, Alabama. Mrs. McGuire was a devoted life long member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Florence, Alabama where she served in numerous church ministries. She served as the second and first vice president and president of the Muscle Shoals District Women’s Auxiliary, a member of Miriam Chapter No. 6 Order of the Eastern Star, and Kappa Phi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Mrs. McGuire’s early education began at Mt. Zion School in west Lauderdale County.

She graduated from Burrell High School (Florence, Alabama) in 1944. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education at Alabama State University and Master of Arts and the education specialist degrees from the University of North Alabama. Beginning in 1951 and retiring in 1988, Mrs. McGuire was an elementary teacher at Mt. Zion Elementary School, West End High School, Underwood School, and Wilson School. Her dedication to the teaching profession earned her award “Teacher of the Year.” She held membership in educational organizations to include Alabama Education Association, National Education Association, and Alabama State University and University of North Alabama alumni associations.

Mrs. McGuire is survived by three daughters, Georgia Greene, Cherrie McGuire, and Kandy Hamilton; three sons, Minister Melvin Summerhill (Janice), retired Col. Tamer McGuire (Dr. Melissa), and Charles R. McGuire; 18 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren; and three godchildren.

Public viewing will be today, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Grace Memorial Funeral Home, Sheffield. Visitation will be today, 6-8 p.m., at Grace Memorial Funeral Home, Sheffield, Alabama. Funeral services will be set Sept. 2, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Florence, Alabama and interment in Galilee Church Cemetery.
