Dorothy King – Obituary

Dorothy King or Dot, as she was known to her close friends, died on Friday, Aug. 11, 2017, at her residence at Elmcroft Assisted Living in Huntsville. She passed away from complications due to a long stemming illness with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). She was born in Valdosta, Georgia, and she was a loving mother and grandmother. She was a teacher for 37-plus years with the Morgan County Board of Education. She strongly believed in the importance of education and went on, herself, to earn two Masters’ Degrees and working towards a PH.D in Special Education from Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee. Dot was known for her servant’s heart during her many years of teaching, many times providing clothes, food or just an ear to those students in need.She went above and beyond her role as teacher by even opening her home many times to her students. She loved to travel and spend time with her family. She will be missed greatly by all that knew her.

Dot is preceded in death by her mother, Arrie Lou Burnett; father, James Curtis Swilley; brothers, Johnny Curtis Swilley, Charles W. Burnett and Paul W. Burnett; sister, Margaret Renfrow; and daughter, Robin King McCord.

She is survived by her exhusband, Robert M. King; sons, Robert M. King Jr. and Ronald Mark King; daughter, Linda K. Corbet; grandchildren, Joshua Paul Reeves, Emily Revell, Bryan McCord and Luke McCord; as well as five great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Roselawn Funeral Home on Wednesday, Aug. 23rd at 10 a.m. Visitation will be Tuesday, Aug. 22nd from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to Suicide Prevention, such as American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Mental Health agencies or COPD Foundation.
