Sgt. Noel David Mayfield, 67, of Decatur went to be with his Lord and Savior on Aug. 10, 2017 after fighting a long, hard battle against cancer. He was born Nov. 11, 1949 to William and Lois Mayfield.

Noel spent all of his adult life giving back to and serving his community. When he was 18, he was drafted into the US Army. He was a MP serving most of his time at Redstone Arsenal.

In 1976, he continued to serve as an officer for the Decatur Police Department. During his time with the Decatur PD he was an instrumental part in starting the SAFE program, a community outreach program for underprivileged youth in Decatur. Growing up in low income housing himself, he wanted to make sure the kids knew they could be anything they dreamed of and wanted to create a safe environment for them to go after school. He was able to mentor many children through the SAFE program. Noel was also a CASA Advocate for children. He retired from the Decatur PD in 2006 after 30 years of service. Noel was a proud 25-year member of the Rising Sun Masonic Lodge in Decatur.

He was preceded in death by his parents and oldest son, Jason. He leaves behind his wife of 31 years, Terry Mayfield; two sons, Noel David Mayfield II (Spike) and William Joseph Mayfield (BJ); and two daughters, Jennifer Robin Mayfield and Ashley Brooke Mayfield; two brothers, Gary Mayfield and Michael Mayfield; and three sisters, Beverly McNabb, Judy Bell, and Rita Wallace.

Visitation for Noel will be tomorrow, August 14th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Decatur. Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. and conclude with a graveside service at Decatur City Cemetery. Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family request you make a donation in memory of Noel to any cancer research foundation. Also, in remembrance of Noel, we ask that you always use your turn signal appropriately.
