John Charles Shanks – Obituary

John Charles Shanks, age 85, passed away Thursday morning, August 10, 2017 at his home.

He was born September 11, 1931 in Glendale, CA, the son of the late Charles Edward and Elsa Marie Ehrlicher Shanks. He graduated from Bartlett High School and attended U.T. Knoxville on a football scholarship. He left U.T. and entered the Air Force. He was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base during the Korean War. He was discharged in 1955 as an Airman First Class.
He worked for Waverly Fabric, living in Memphis, Orlando, Atlanta and back to Memphis. He married Ellen Covington in 1970. They lived in Memphis and he worked for the family business, Bluff City Broomcorn Company.

He was manufacturing representative for Shanks Marketing, representing children’s clothes to include; Osh Kosh B Bosh, IZod, Poly Flinders, Good Lad, Sassoon and other brands marketing all over the Southeast with show rooms at the apparel market in Atlanta and Charlotte, NC. They moved to Henderson in 1977. He retired in 2011.

He enjoyed showing Quarter Horses. John was an outstanding father and was very devoted and encouraging to Kurt.

Mr. Shanks is survived by his wife, Ellen Covington Shanks of Henderson; a son, John Steven Shanks of Jackson and a daughter, Cheryl Lynn Edmonds of Arlington; seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Kurt Edward Shanks in 2011.

Funeral services will be 6:00 PM Saturday at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Casey Chapel with Rick Smith officiating. Burial will follow with Military Honors at Chester County Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Casey Chapel 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM on Saturday.
