THE SHOALS-The Northwest Alabama Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council gave $5,000 to Shoals Area COARMM to assist in their daily operations of assisting and mentoring at-risk students in the area.

According to Ernest L Darby, Executive Director, Project Hope provides an after school program which offers a safe haven for At-Risk and underprivileged youths. The contribution received from RC&D enabled COARMM to continue to provide free tutoring, snacks, and pay the daily expenses vital to the operation of the center. “It also allowed us to buy educational materials and other items we couldn’t imagine purchasing without your assistance”, Mr. Darby stated.

Lauranne James, Executive Director of NWAL RC&D, along with a couple of Board Members, Bill Taylor and James Bingham, representatives of Colbert County, reviewed the project  and recommended board approval; the Board approved the project unanimously. The Board agreed there was a need for a program like this in that so many students fall between the cracks. Roger Hayes, Chairman of the Board, also expressed his appreciation to Senator Larry Stutts and Representatives Marcel Black and Johnny Mack Morrow for the support they provide for the RC&D in the state legislature.
