Huntsville, AL – Today Rep. Mo Brooks (AL-05) announced that he will be joining representatives from the five U.S. Service Academies in hosting a special “Academy Day” for students across North Alabama. Interested students who live in Alabama’s Fifth Congressional District and want to learn more about attending one of the Service Academies are encouraged to attend the event, which will take place on Sunday, September 16, from 2:30 – 4:30 PM at Madison Academy, in the Madison Academy Cafeteria, 325 Slaughter Road, Madison, AL.

Rep. Brooks said, “North Alabamians have a proud tradition of sending some of the brightest students in the country to the U.S. Service Academies. The 2012 appointee class scored well above average for their year, and our West Point appointees were ranked in the top 10 out of 435 Congressional districts nationwide. I am confident that the appointees for 2013 will continue that tradition of excellence, and I’m looking forward to meeting potential applicants and hearing about their interest in serving our country. I strongly encourage students to come out to Academy Day and learn firsthand from the representatives of each academy about the requirements, and benefits, of attending.”

Brooks continued, “I would also like to invite the families of students, guidance counselors, and school officials to join us for Academy Day to learn more about the opportunities available to students at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.”

Representative Brooks nominates outstanding students each year for appointments. A Member of Congress may nominate students to attend an academy if the students meet eligibility requirements and live in the representative’s congressional district. Alabama’s Fifth Congressional District includes Colbert, Jackson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, and Morgan Counties. At Brooks’ invitation, representatives from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy will attend Academy Day and answer questions and distribute information about their respective institutions.

All nomination applications must be submitted to Congressman Brooks’ office by Wednesday, November 7, 2012.  For more information about the nomination process, please visit the Congressman’s website at brooks.house.gov.
