Freddie “Fred” Lee Williams – Obituary

Freddie “Fred” Lee Williams, 93, of Ormond Beach, FL, passed away surrounded by his family on July 20, 2017. Freddie was born in Blount County, AL to Walter and Ola Williams. He graduated from Oneonta High School in 1943 and joined the Army Air Forces as a navigator and bombardier during World War II. After his honorable discharge, he attended Birmingham Southern and the University of Alabama where he graduated with a Civil Engineering degree in 1949 and began working for Southern Bell. In 1951, he was recalled to active duty, serving during the Korean War as a pilot instructor for the Air Force.
On April 10, 1953, he married the former Evelyn Lane in Birmingham. His job led them to Huntsville in 1963, where he ultimately retired as Manager of the Engineering Department in 1987. He remained active in the community as a member of Whitesburg Baptist Church, the Telephone Pioneers and a 20+ year volunteer at Huntsville Hospital.
Freddie is survived by his son, Michael of Leesburg, VA; three grandchildren, Lauren (and husband, John Puhl), Noah and Joe; his wife’s brother and sister, Frank Lane of Jacksonville, FL and Edwyna Ivey of Andalusia, AL; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his sister, Mildred Wester.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at Whitesburg Baptist South Campus with a celebration of life service to follow. Burial will be at 2:00 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Oneonta, AL. (www.laughlinservice.com)
