SHEFFIELD-On July 23, 2017, at approximately 5:00 PM, this reporter was traveling North on South Montgomery Ave, when we viewed that there had been a motorcycle vs. SUV wreck.  This was just past the Jack’s Restaurant, close to the Fuel City Gas Station.

According  to witnesses, the driver of a four door Maroon Ford Explorer was traveling west on Saywell Street when he came to the stop sign at Saywell and South Montgomery Ave.   The driver intended to cross South Montgomery Ave to the Fuel City Gas Station.  At that time, a motorcycle driven by James Hodges, crashed into the right side of the Explorer.

Sheffield Police Department, Sheffield Fire Department as well as Keller Ambulance was quickly notified and arrived on scene.  Mr. Hodges was placed inside the Keller Ambulance.  A relative (of Mr. Hodges) that worked at the Jack’s Restaurant saw what had happened and rushed to the scene.

Due to the seriousness of the accident, Med Flight was called out.  Med Flight arrived in the area and began to circle before being directed to land at Keller Hospital.  Mr. Hodges began to recover conscious at this time and was transported to Keller Hospital via Keller Ambulance. Sources reported to this reporter that Mr. Hodges passed away due to his injuries.

Lt Drew Sebelski and Lt Ray Terry as well as other Police Officers from  the Sheffield Police Department began to investigate the accident.

A relative of Hodges told this reporter that Hodges had just gotten this motorcycle.  The impact between the motorcycle and the SUV was so hard that one of Hodges’ shoes and a portion of the motorcycle windshield were found by the gated area behind the Fuel City Gas Station.

The driver of the SUV stated to authorities that “he did not see the motorcycle when he pulled into traffic.”    This accident is under investigation by the Sheffield Police Department.

This is the second motorcycle accident that occurred this weekend in the Quad Cities.  The first accident which occurred on Friday, July 21 was in Muscle Shoals. The motorcyclist in this accident, Charles Cook also died from his injuries.
