Nancy S. Stevens

Born and raised in Sheffield, Alabama, Nancy was the oldest daughter of James Louis Snyder and Roberta Dickey Snyder.

Nancy graduated from Sheffield High School and later attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa where she received a Bachelor of Science in Education.

In August of 1959, she married Benjamin Charles Stevens Jr. of Maryland. After her husband’s service at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas was completed, the couple moved to Decatur, Alabama. Nancy was a member of the Decatur Junior Service League and was instrumental in creating their first cookbook, “Cotton Country Cooking” in 1972.

For over 22 years, Nancy taught for Decatur City Schools, primarily middle school. She was beloved as a no-nonsense teacher with a feisty personality and a quick wit. After retiring from teaching, Nancy was highly active at St. John’s Episcopal Church of Decatur in their St. Anne’s Guild, Altar Guild and served as Flower Guild Chairman for several years. She was an active member of the Courtland Historic Association of Courtland, Alabama. Later in her life, Nancy was in the process of attaining a Masters of Gardening distinction when she fell ill.

Nancy is survived by: her husband of 58 years, Benjamin Charles Stevens, Jr.; sons, James Michael Stevens, Mark Benjamin Stevens and wife, Christina Orfley Stevens; daughter Amy Stevens Cosby and husband, Joseph Conway Cosby, Jr.; grandchildren Madeline Ashur Cosby, Benjamin Silas Cosby, Kyle Benjamin Stevens and Danielle Maria Stevens; sister, Sarah Snyder Hall; nephews, Bradley Snyder Hall and Andrew Russell Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to be made to: St. John’s Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 202 Gordon Drive, SE, Decatur, AL 35601 or Courtland Historical Foundation, PO Box 32, Courtland, AL 35618.

Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 18th at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 202 Gordon Drive, SE, Decatur, Alabama 35601. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. and service will begin at 2 p.m.
