An Ancient Sanctuary To Pagan God Pan….Really?

Archaeologists in northern Israel have uncovered a massive Roman-era gate they think may possibly have served as an entrance to an ancient pagan compound.

The compound may have been used in worship and festivities honoring Pan, the ancient god of flocks and shepherds identified for his love of music and sexuality.

“The worship of Pan at times included ceremonies involving drinking, sacrifices, and ecstatic rituals which includes nudity and sex. This worship normally took place outside the city walls, in caves and other all-natural settings,” stated Michael Eisenberg, director of the Hippos-Sussita Excavations Project.

The mask’s placement outside what would have been the city walls led Eisenberg to speculate at the time that there may possibly have been an altar to Pan on the primary road leading into the city.
