Lt. Cdr. Calvin Hubert Romans, USN, Retired, 77, died Sunday, June 25, 2017 at the Central Baptist Lexington Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky following a stroke. He leaves his wife of 53 years, Judith (Middleton) Romans; his son, Gregory Romans and his wife, Dorinda (Bishop) Romans from Huntsville, Alabama; his son, Douglas Romans and his wife Leslie (Miller) Romans from Acworth, Georgia; and his daughter, Janet (Romans) Cole and her husband Tommy Cole from Huntsville, Alabama; his sister, Barbara (Romans) Danley and her husband James Danley of Tuscumbia, Alabama; his brother Rodger Romans and his wife Katherine (Bean) Romans of Palmdale, California; and his brother Dennis Romans and his wife Lisa (Corey) Romans of Cartersville, Georgia; three granddaughters, Jordan Romans, Cassidy Romans, Allison Romans, two grandsons, Michael Romans and Joshua Romans; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Born in Sheffield, Alabama, and raised in Sheffield, Colbert County and Vernon, Lamar County, Alabama, the son of Calvin Coolidge Romans and Flora Jane (Smith) Romans, he was a longtime resident of Huntsville, Alabama. After graduating from Lamar County High School in 1958, he enlisted in the United States Navy and became a submariner. In 1963 he was accepted into the Naval Enlisted Scientific Education Program (NESEP) and upon completion of the program began attending Vanderbilt University where he studied Electrical Engineering and where he met his wife to be, Judith Margaret Middleton from Calhoun, Georgia. They were married in 1964 at Calhoun Church of Christ. In 1967 he graduated from Vanderbilt with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and received his commission as an Officer in the United States Navy. While serving in active duty he also attended the George Washington University and in 1980 received a Master’s degree in Public Administration. Over his long career he served on many submarines, both diesel and nuclear, in a variety of increasingly responsible positions. In 1980, while serving as the navigator on the USS James Monroe, and following 22 years of active duty service, he retired from the Navy and took the opportunity to join the Boeing Company in Huntsville, Alabama as an engineer. In 1985, he started work for McDonnell Douglas in Huntsville, Alabama, where he worked as an engineer, manager, and liaison between McDonnell Douglas and TRW. In 1997, McDonnell Douglas merged with the Boeing Company, where he worked until 2007 when he retired after 27 years of service. When he entered retirement he dedicated much of his time to serving the Lord at his home church of 36 years, Calvary Bible Church in Huntsville, Alabama, by serving on the deacon and elder boards, as well as on the R-Force, landscaping the church grounds.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Bible Church with Elder Dwight Waldrop officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
