Mary Josephine Nichols Hicks 84, of Decatur passed away Sunday, June 25, 2017 at her residence. Mrs. Hicks was born in Abbeville, a small town in southeast Alabama, to Lucius Sherman Nichols, Jr. and Josephine Mae Reynolds Nichols on August 8, 1932. She attended kindergarten, elementary school, and high school there. After receiving a BS degree from the University of Alabama., she worked two years for Senator John Sparkman in Washington D.C. and in his Huntsville office. Since her parents had moved to Decatur, she chose to remain in Alabama and worked at Chemstrand for two years. She then taught school in the Morgan County and Decatur City Systems. She joined First Baptist Church in Abbeville where she was an active member before transferring her membership to First Baptist Decatur where both churches and Sunday School classes were a blessing and opportunity for Christian growth. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Delta Pi Epsilon, Retired Teachers, The Culture Club and the Junior League of Morgan County. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son Perry Spencer Hicks, II. Survivors include three grandchildren and cousins in Birmingham and south Alabama. Funeral will be Tuesday, at First Baptist Church at the Stephenson Chapel. Burial will follow at Decatur City Cemetery. Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home will announce the times.
