Alesa Lucille Bernard Shaw – Obituary

Alesa Lucille Bernard Shaw was born November 16, 1922 to Lula and Ruben Bernard in the hills of Kentucky. She was known throughout her life as, “Lucille as well as Alesa.” She went to her Lord, June 14, 2017. Alesa had 5 brothers: Charlie, Melvin, Walter, Marvin and LeRoy Bernard. She had 2 sisters: Beulah Brockman and Christine Evans and one half-sister Clanzie Roy.

She grew up riding in a horse drawn buggy helping her father transport groceries to their dry good store or helping in the post office where he was Post Master. Her father taught her bookkeeping which she later utilized her skills for keeping the books for a 218-acre homestead. Every year she had an abundant organic garden long before it was chic. From her garden she canned many vegetables as well as made delicious pickled peaches and blackberry jam. She was meticulous in every project she started from making quilts to sewing for her children.

Beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Alesa was mother to eight children, two of whom have preceded her to Heaven: James Harold Shaw and Betty Helen Thoni. She is survived by: Herschel Shaw (Indiana), Larry and Bruce Shaw (Alabama), Linda Morrison (Ohio) and Brenda Power and Gary Shaw(Texas); sixteen Grandchildren, fifteen Great-Grandchildren and two Great Great-Grandchildren.

Lucille was a devout Christian and had a beautiful singing voice. She served as a Sunday School teacher, attended church and completed many Bible Study courses. In her 40s, she returned to college and completed her nurses’ training and enjoyed caring for her patients for many years. Her visitation will be held on Saturday, June 17, 2017 from 12 to 1pm at Hampton Cove Funeral Home with the funeral service following at 1pm. Burial will be in Hampton Cove Cemetery which adjoins the funeral home.
