Hazel Gronert – Obituary

Hazel Gronert entered into rest on June 9, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services will be at St. Teresa of Avila Church with Father Ingram officiating on June 15, 2017, at 11 a.m. Pallbearers are Charles Tolliver, Shannon Tolliver, John Carr, David Carr, Scott Carr, and Gavin Carr.

Hazel was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1921 to the late Claire Dale Carter and Lavina Catherine Buckle Carter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James H. Tolliver of 33 years; her second husband, Lloyd Griffith of 13 years; and her third husband, Frank Gronert of seven years. She was also preceded in death by four of her five brothers and her three sisters.

She is survived by her brother, Lloyd Carter and his wife, Peggy Carter; her children, Charlotte Tolliver Carr and spouse John Carr, MD, of Augusta, Charles R. Tolliver, of Hawthorne, Florida, and Janice Tolliver Schmidt and spouse Bill Schmidt, of Concrete, Washington. She is also survived by multiple grandchildren, great-grandchildren, stepchildren, stepgrandchildren and nieces, nephews and their spouses.

Hazel lived in Sheffield, Alabama until she married James Tolliver in 1941. She moved to West Palm Beach, Florida where she lived for over 60 years. She worked at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft for 21 years as a stenographer. After outliving each of her three husbands, she moved to Augusta, Georgia in 2006 and had lived at Brandon Wilde Life Center until her death.

She was an active member of St. Teresa of Avila’s Church. She was a competitive ballroom dancer, and she was a member of Atlantis Country Club until 2005 when she moved to Florida. She was an avid golfer and loved horseback riding and reading.

Interment will be at St. Teresa of Avila’s Columbarium at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2017. The family will receive friends at Elliott Sons Funeral Home on Columbia Road today from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Teresa of Avila’s building fund.
