Kent Lawrence Uhlir – Obituary

Kent Lawrence Uhlir, age 77 in Huntsville, Alabama. A resident of Guntersville, Kent was born October 7, 1939 in Kimball, South Dakota to the late Olga Frances Drasky Uhlir and the late Theodore Edward Uhlir. He served his country in the Air Force, actively from 1958 to 1963 and then in the Air Force Reserves for many years. Kent was an active member of the Creek Path Baptist Church here in Guntersville; a member of the Guntersville Rescue Squad and volunteered time every year offering free Tax preparation with Marshall County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. He was a “Worshipful Master” at the Dearborn Masonic Lodge but hasn’t been active for the past 30 years. Kent worked for Western Electric and Bell Labs, he was a retired member of the Communication Workers of America (affiliated with AFL-CIO).
Kent moved to Guntersville in 1987 from Orland Park, IL on what news outlets from across the country called a “Journal of a Lifetime” and “Modern Day Huck Finn Odyssey”. He and his son, Kurt and several friends took a 23-foot, 25 year old pontoon boat on a 980 mile, nine day journey from Chicago to their new home in Guntersville, AL. Kent married his beloved wife Lona Rhae Stone April 15, 1961. He is survived by his wife, Lona Stone Uhlir, a daughter, Barbara Jean Call (Skip) two sons, Donald Carl Uhlir (Patti) and Kurt Brooks Uhlir (Valerie); six grandchildren, Shauna Ann Moore, Phillip Scott Uhlir (Catherine), Leah Rhae Uhlir,
Shaun David Conlin (Lisa), Jessica Marie Conlin and Robert Thomas Call and one grandchild, Ella Rhae Gosa. Kent is preceded in death by his parents, Olga Frances Uhlir and Theodore Edward Uhlir, step-father, Howard Brooks Scharnhorst brother, Barry Uhlir and sister, Beverly Uhlir. Visitation was Friday, June 9th beginning 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Carr Funeral Home, the Funeral Service will be Saturday, June 10th at 2:00 PM at the Creek Path Baptist Church; Kent will lie-in-state from 1:00 to service time. Burial will be at Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery in Union Grove, AL. Bro. Rick Douglass officiating. Arrangements entrusted to Carr Funeral Home – Guntersville.
