Ella Markham DeVan Harris – Obituary

Ella Markham DeVan Harris 84, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, May 25, 2017, She passed peacefully from this life into glory while at Lakeview Place in Mantachie with her daughter at her side. She was born August 20, 1932 in Mobile, Al to the late Walter and Helen DeVan. Ella loved her family and left them the wonderful legacy of a Christian mother and grandmother. She attended and supported several different Churches in her later years including Open Door Worship Center Fulton, MS New Life Church, Tupelo. MS and Word of Life Church, Tupelo, MS. She loved the Lord and loved to worship Him with upraised hands. She attended Montevallo College, Birmingham Southern, in Alabama, and went on to receive her Master’s Degree in Education at Jackson State University. Ella taught School all her adult life for approximately 45 years in Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Florida, and the Republic of Zaire (now the Republic of Congo) in Africa as a Missionary. Her longest stretch of teaching was in Vicksburg, MS where she taught for approximately 25 years, teaching two generations of students. Ella loved visiting and praying with her family. She loved to work crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She was a pleasant and enjoyable person to be around.
A service celebrating her life and home going will be 6:00 P.M. Sunday, May 28, 2017 at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Bro. John Griffus, and Pastor Terry Garrett officiating. Private burial will be at Itawamba Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 4PM till service Sunday only all at Holland Tupelo Chapel.
Survivors include two daughters; Cindie Tuggle (Jimmy) of Vicksburg; Dianne Germany of Belden, two sons: Albert Harris (Yvetta) of Iuka, and Walter Harris (Yvonne) of Houston, TX. Ten grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.
