FLORENCE-The Florence Police Department released a statement concerning the report of possible drowning call on Friday, May 19:
“Shortly before 1pm today Florence Police responded with Florence Fire and Shoals Ambulance to the 100 block of Augusta Street to a possible drowning.
Officers and medical personnel arrived to find two men unresponsive. CPR was started on both and both were transported from the scene by EMS.
Witnesses at the scene described a male in his 60’s who was found in a swimming pool by his adult son. The son jumped into the pool in an attempt to save his father and described being “shocked” while in the pool.
As the son was removing the father from the pool he began to experience a medical emergency and became unresponsive. Florence Police Detectives along with official from the Florence Fire Department, Florence Electricity Department, and Florence Building Department are continuing our investigation into the incident.
We can confirm that an electrical current was found in the swimming pool, however, the nature of that current is still under investigation. It is our understanding that both men were resuscitated by medical personnel and are being transferred to acute care units within the hospital. Their condition is unknown at this time.
While we do not believe the incident is critical in nature we will continue to work with the family and city officials to determine the cause of the electrical current in the pool at the time of the incident.
The names and exact ages of the victims are not available at this time. This is still an active investigation.”
