Connie D. Thompson – Obituary

Mr. Connie D. Thompson was born June 9, 1926, in Cherokee, Alabama and died May 16, 2017, at ECM Hospital in Florence, Alabama.

He was the fourth son of Reverend Charlie Thompson and Mrs. Minnie Cook Thompson, both deceased.

He professed hope in Christ at an early age and became a member of Rutland Chapel CME Church where he served until joining the Army. After his discharge from the Army, he resided in Florence, Alabama. He joined the Greater St. Paul AME Church where he served faithfully for almost 70 years. He served as a trustee, taught the Todd’s Bible class, and sang in the Celestial Choir and the Sons of Allen Singers. He served as treasurer of the Celestial Choir and the Sunday school. His greatest enjoyment was kissing the ladies of the church each Sunday. He worked many years at TVA until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Eddie, Charles, and Joseph Thompson, and two sisters, Mrs. Corine Mason and Mrs. Beulah Lumbus.

He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife of 63 years, Mrs. Nora Brown Thompson; two daughters, Mrs. Carolyn Hayes, of Ypsilanti, Michigan, and Mrs. Mildred Woods, of Anniston, Alabama; two godchildren, Ms. Audrey and Mr. Jeffery Mitchell; a special niece, Mrs. Denise Todd Cottrell (Curtis); four grandhildren, Daryl, Kevin and Marquise Hayes, and Jacque Wana Woods; one great-grandchild; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Gladys (Willie Mack) Neal; one dedicated brother-in-law, Mr. Clarence (Elizabeth) Brown; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends.

Visitation with the family will be today, 6-8 p.m., at Thompson and Son Funeral Home, Florence, Alabama. The funeral service for Mr. Thompson will be noon Saturday, May 20, 2017, at Greater St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church, Florence, Alabama. Reverend Alvelyn Sanders is officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Florence, Alabama. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. The public viewing will be today, noon-8 p.m.
