Larry G. Campbell – Obituary

Dr. Larry G. Campbell passed away at his home on May 1, 2017. He was born in Granite, Oklahoma on Dec. 7, 1937. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elzie and Fern Campbell of Oklahoma City.

Larry is survived by his wife of 42 years, Christine Morris Campbell; two sons, Michael (Sherry), of Pell City, and Alan (Stephanie), of Wilsonville; his brother, Jerry Campbell (Betty), of Lakewood, New Mexico; and three grandchildren, Carolina Campbell Scott Hernandez and Lauren and Anna Campbell.

Larry first served in the U.S. Air Force as an electronics technician in the guided missile program at Redstone Arsenal and he retired from the U.S. Navy in 1985 as a Commander in the Navy Dental Corps. During his military career, he was also stationed with the U.S. Marines in Vietnam. His education included a Doctorate in Dental Surgery from Baylor College of Dentistry, Dallas, Texas.

After military service, Larry had a private dental practice in Seguin, Texas for five years. He then volunteered to work full-time with the Episcopal Medical Mission Foundation for several years in the Dominican Republic and Honduras.

Larry was a man of many talents and interests, he traveled extensively in Europe and Latin America. In his younger years he enjoyed flying his own plane and skiing; he also took a keen interest in genealogy, investments and his family. He and Christine built a home in Colorado doing most of the work themselves. Larry was a devout Christian and a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church of Decatur.

Visitation will be at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church at 2210 Westmeade Road, Decatur from 10 a.m. on Friday, May 5, 2017. A service celebrating Larry’s life will follow at 11 a.m. with Reverends Marvin McCormick and Charles Sinclair officiating. Interment in Arlington National Cemetery will take place at a later date.

It is suggested that memorial donations be sent to Neighborhood Christian Center, 619 Bank Street, Decatur, Alabama 35601 or Hospice of the Valley, P.O Box 2745, Decatur, Alabama 35602. Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family.
