FLORENCE – University of North Alabama students Cindy and Ashlee Gatlin will graduate Saturday, May 13, during spring commencement.

While two persons who share the same surname may not seem unique, as it turns out, Cindy and Ashlee are mother and daughter!

Cindy Gatlin is graduating from the Anderson College of Nursing online program with a B.S.  in nursing, after previously working as a registered nurse.  Daughter Ashlee Gatlin is also graduating from the Anderson College of Nursing’s traditional program with a B.S. in nursing.

“It’s not unusual for nurses to be the child of a nurse,” said Dr. Vicki Pierce, dean of the Anderson College of Nursing.  “Very often in nursing, and other professions as well, children tend to follow in the footsteps of another family member,” she said.

An even more fitting note, spring commencement is the day before Mother’s Day.

UNA’s spring commencement will take place Saturday, May 13, at 10 a.m., and 2 p.m., in Flowers Hall.  Graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences and the Anderson College of Nursing will participate in the first ceremony at 10 a.m.  The graduates from the College of Business and the College of Education and Human Sciences will participate in the second ceremony at 2 p.m.
