Mildred Lorene King Enlow-Gargis – Obituary

Mildred Lorene King Enlow-Gargis, 91, of Tuscumbia, died Wednesday, August 29, 2012. She was born in Spring Valley at “Shine’s Place”, Tuscumbia, Alabama, October 21, 1920 to Lester Eugene King and Vergie Ethel Jefferies King, descendants of pioneer families, and lived in Tuscumbia practically all of her life.

She was the widow of William Charles “Chippy” Enlow, who died November 16, 1991, after 54 years of marriage. Also preceding her in death were her grandson, Christopher Keith Enlow and brother, Hillman Hubert King.

Mrs. Gargis was a Registered-Certified Medical Secretary, employed by Dr. Wyatt Heflin Blake, Jr. for 37 years. She was very active in medical organizations such as the National Certified Medical Secretaries for 25 years, often serving in official offices.

She was a charter Member of Business and Professional Women’s Association, holding membership in the International and Sheffield Pilot Club 48 years. Remaining viably active, she presently held membership in DAR Alabama Officer’s Club. She was an active member of the Chief Colbert Chapter of National Society of Daughter’s of American Revolution. She was a long-time member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Tuscumbia Chapter #201.

Mildred had an ardent interest in journalism and, for many years, dabbled in writing. She had written articles in medical journals and various magazines. She has been a viable correspondent for the Colbert County Reporter for nine years. Her special column was “Enlow Insights.”

She was an active member of The First Baptist Church of Tuscumbia since her early youth, a past member for many years of the church choir and presently a member of Fulgham Sunday School Class. She also served as Church Historian.

Survivors include: her son, William King Enlow and his wife, Mary Ann of Huntsville; twin granddaughters, Debra Lynn Enlow Carl (husband, Brett William Carl of Suffolk, Virginia), Kimberly Dawn Enlow Baxter (husband Duane Justin Baxter of Mobile). Five great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons: Caitlin Mackenzie Carl, Riley Elizabeth Carl, Addison Claire Carl, Bailey Nicole Baxter, Owen Christopher Baxter, Seth William Baxter and Brooklyn Faith Baxter; brother, Howard Eugene King of Florence; a number nieces, nephews and cousins; stepsons, John Walter Gargis and wife Jan of Knoxville, Tennessee, Thomas Ligon Gargis of Atlanta, Georgia; stepdaughter, Connie McIlwain and husband Dr. Mark McIlain; step-granddaughters, Lori Gargis Wild and husband, Chris of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Mary Ellen McIlain and step-grandson, Joseph McIlwain of Tuscumbia.

Visitation will be Sunday, September 2, 2012 from 12:30-2:00 at Morrison Funeral Home in Tuscumbia with her funeral service following at 2:00 in the Funeral Home with Reverend Barrett Long officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Tuscumbia.

Pallbearers will be Deacons and staff of First Baptist Church, Tuscumbia, Alabama: John Ellett, Brudgie Davis, Dr. Jerry Olsen, Jimmy Don Kimbrough, Bryce Tidmore and Sammy Richardson.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. John Mims, Reed Kirkland, John McCollum, Joel Parish, Stewart Chappell, Robert Chappell, Phillip Chappell, Walter Andrews, Jap Patton, Walker Kirkland, Howard Smith, Dr. Wyatt Heflin Blake, III, Steve Bigbee, Harlon King and Lewis Timberlake.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church or favorite charities.
