Mr. Houston died on Friday, April 21, 2017 at Parkway Medical Center. He was born January 30, 1930 in Town Creek, Alabama to Joseph Harvey Houston and Mildred Ray Houston. He was a loving husband, Papa and Gran Gran. He was an avid Auburn fan. As a devoted Christian, he served Hartselle First United Methodist Church in many roles, such as youth leader and a member of the administrative board. His willingness to help others was his calling as God’s good and faithful servant. He graduated from Hazelwood High school, received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Husbandry from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) in 1952 and earned his Master’s Degree in Agriculture from Auburn University. He was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S. Army. He began his career with the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service in Lauderdale County in 1954 serving as assistant extension agent, coordinating 4-H Clubs and working with area farmers. He moved to Hartselle in 1958 where he served in the same capacity. He was promoted to Extension Service Coordinator and served in that position until he retired in 1986. Working with area farmers in Morgan County allowed him to do what he loved doing best, agriculture! Everyone knew who you were talking about when you said, “Mr. Harry”. He enjoyed retirement to the fullest. He was a lifelong season ticket holder to Auburn University football games. He enjoyed working in the garden, tending to his cattle and attending events in which his grandchildren took part and spending time with his Church family.
