Homer Nelson Grissom – Obituary

Homer Nelson Grissom, age 92, of Russellville, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at his residence.

The visitation will be 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Russellville, with the funeral following at 1:00 p.m. at the church. Speakers will be Dr. Gene Balding and Wayne Ray, with special music provided by Richard Parker and Bert Fowler. Burial will be at Franklin Memory Gardens with full military honors.

Homer was born November 09, 1924 in Franklin County. He attended Rockwood Junior High and graduated from Russellville High School in 1943. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked several jobs in his lifetime, including Phillips Petroleum Company Jobber for Franklin County for 15 years, he built and co-owned Frosty Inn Restaurant, and was a rural mail carrier for the Russellville Post Office for 33-1/2 years. He was the past president of Alabama Rural Carrier for 3 years and was voted “Carrier of the Year of Alabama” by the Alabama Rural Carrier Association. He was a charter member and past president of the Russellville Rotary Club and received the Rotarian of the Year Award. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), and DAV. He was inducted into the Franklin County Sports Hall of Fame, Secretary of Russellville PTA 1965 – 1966, and was a charter member of Russellville Athletic Booster Club. He was the author of a new book “A Country Boy in Tryin’ Times”. He was a great father, a leader, and he loved his family and friends. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Russellville, and was a member of Dr. Pritchard’s Sunday School Class.

He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Ray Grissom; grandchildren, Christopher Ray Grissom (wife, Beth), Leslie Grissom Welborn (husband, Mike); great-grandchildren, Grant Grissom, Matthew Grissom, Laurel Beth Grissom; Emmary Claire Welborn; and a host of nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Polly Grissom; parents, Robert & Ada (Bendall) Grissom; 3 sisters and 10 brothers.

The pallbearers will be Ronnie Murphy, Robin Grissom, David Grissom, Mark Grissom, Curt Grissom, and Larry Franks. The honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Rural Mail Carriers Association.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Homer’s sitters, Brenda & Larry Vandiver, Christy Vickers, and Mindy Hardy. Also a special thanks to the nurses and staff of Amedisys Hospice for your love and care of our family.
