Roy Barnett Johnson, 97, of Decatur died Thursday, April 13, 2017 at his residence. Mr. Johnson was born on Jun 18, 1919, in Arkansas, to O. E. Johnson and Jenny Stell Johnson. Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, son Charles Roy Johnson, sisters, Louis Allen, Martha Sparkman, Doris Pittman, son-in-law Velford C. Strain, and daughter-in-law, Winnie H. Johnson. He is survived by his loving wife of 73 ½ years, Odell Hopson Johnson, one son, Joe G. Johnson (Lynda) Statesville, NC, daughters, Patsy J. Strain, Nancy S. Johnson and J. Jill Johnson all of Decatur, Alabama; his sisters, Bertha Holtzclaw of Decatur, AL and Beulah Crow of Romulus Michigan; one brother, James E. Johnson of Trinity, Alabama; brother-in-laws, Howard Allen and Richard Sparkman; two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Mr. Johnson worked for Mutual Savings Life Insurance, as an agent, for 32 years. He served in the US Navy in World War II, and was a member of Enon Baptist Church and a member of Mt. Zion Masonic Lodge #542 for over 50 years. Visitation will be Monday, April 17, 2017 from 11:00am until 1:00pm at Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home followed by a 1:00pm chapel service with Brother Steve Ledbetter officiating. Burial will follow at Round Top Cemetery in Massey, Alabama. Pallbearers will be Bryan Johnson, Mike Johnson, Jimmy Johnson, Homer Long, Joel Nelson and Alton Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Clark and Jerry Preuitt, policyholders of Mutual Savings Life Insurance Company, and the brothers of Mt. Zion Masonic Lodge #542. The family would like to express a special thanks to AlaCare Hospice. The family suggests in lieu of flowers donations be made to AlaCare Hospice of Decatur, Alabama. Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home is assisting the family.
