Students win 1st, 3rd,and 4th place in state finals of Science Olympiad Tournament

FLORENCE-An academic team of St. Joseph 7th and 8th graders brought home awards in four individual events, including a state championship honor for Sam McNeill and George VanVeckhoven in the competition’s tower-building event. McNeill and VanVeckhoven also finished 4th in Meteorology. Other state honors included a 3rd place finishes for Alex Lewis, Adrian Parker, Michael Mercado, and William Tomlinson. The team also finished 8th overall from the field of 48 statewide teams taking part in this year’s tournament.
The Alabama State finals were held April 1, 2017 at Auburn University, and pitted finalists from regional competitions around the state. This was St. Joseph’s first appearance at the state level, having advanced from the March 4, 2017 UAH Regionals, where the 16-person team finished 4th overall, including 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes in individual events.
The annual Science Olympiad is one of the premier science competitions in the nation. In its 33rd year, Science Olympiad provides rigorous challenges to 7,600 teams in 50 states. The tournament strives to expose students to practicing scientists and career choices, with an ever-changing lineup of competitive events and skillsets.
