Mr. Robert Edward Henry, age 90, of Decatur, Alabama, departed this life on April 7, 2017 at Decatur Morgan Hospital in Decatur, Alabama. Mr. Henry, the first child of six was born on Feb. 13, 1927 in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Anthony George Henry and Maudie Terrell Henry.

He received his formal education in the public schools of Birmingham and graduated from Parker High School. He was a veteran of the U.S Army Air Corps and after his military stint he attended Miles College and graduated in 1950 with a B.S. in Natural Science. He received his Master’s degree from Alabama A& M University. His teaching career began in 1950 at Morgan County Training School. In 1966 he moved to Lakeside High School and later retired as a general science and chemistry teacher in 1985 from Decatur High School. After retiring he was employed for 14 years at First American Bank.

Brother Henry accepted Christ at an early age at Thurgood C.M.E. Church in Birmingham. In 1951, he united with Macedonia C.P. Church in Decatur and later joined King’s Memorial U.M. Church in 1990. Mr. Henry was a faithful and dedicated member of Kings Memorial serving in the following capacities: Methodist Men, Chancel Choir, Men’s Choir, Trustee Board, Sunday school teacher and bible study attendee.

Mr. Henry was very active in his community and was a member of Omega Psi Phi, River City Golfers, Red Cross Board, A.E.A., N.E.A. and Morgan County Education Retirees Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony G. and Maudie Henry; son, Robert “Bobby” Henry II; siblings, Anthony Henry Jr., Emma Louise Henry, and Mary Elizabeth Jennings.

Left to cherish his memory is his devoted and faithful wife, Katherine E. Driver Henry; loving daughter, Cheryl (Chuck) Coleman, all of Decatur; grandchildren, Charles Coleman III, of Huntsville, Lauren Coleman and Christina Coleman, both of Decatur, and Jared Henry, of Athens; siblings, Raymond (Eugenia) Henry and Brigette Faye Henry-Bennett, all of Birmingham, Alabama; sister-in-law, Artha Edna Henry, of Birmingham; one dear friend, Ross Malone Jr., of Decatur; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Honorary flower bearers will be Ladies of River City Golfers and active flower bearers will be Methodist Women. Honorary pallbearers will be River City Golfers and Methodist Men. Active pallbearers will be nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be noon, Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at King’s Memorial United Methodist Church with Pastor Roderick Stallworth officiating and inhumation to follow in Decatur City Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to funeral at the church. Public viewing will be Monday from 10-6 at the funeral home.
