Jo Ann Joyner Spinks, of Florence died Friday, April 7, 2017, at ECM Hospital.

Visitation will be Sunday, April 9, 2017 3-5 PM at Elkins Funeral Home, Florence, Alabama. A visitation will be Monday, April 10, 2017 3-4 PM at Mt Zion Baptist Church in Columbus, MS. Graveside services will follow at 4 PM at Mt. Mt Zion Baptist Church Cemetery with Bro. Steve Lammons officiating. Elkins Funeral Home and Lowndes Funeral Home is assisting the family.

She was born December 3, 1929 in Tallulah, LA to James A. Joyner of Yazoo, MS and Laura Belle Fox Joyner of Charleston, MS. She married July 5, 1959 in West Helena, AR to Hayward Taylor Spinks.

She attended Quachita Baptist College and received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Mississippi State College for Women (MUW) in 1972. she worked as a Physician’s Assistant and as a social worker for many years prior to her retirement.

She was a long time member of First Baptist Church in Columbus, MS where she served as a Sunday school teacher, an active member of the WOM and worked in the “Love in Deed” ministry. Later in life she became a member of Mt Zion Baptist Church in New Hope, MS where she was a member of the Joy Sunday School class and Top Agers and the Woodmont Baptist Church of Florence, AL.

She was a 50 year plus member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority in the Gamma Master Chapter. She also worked for many years with the Lowndes County Home Extension Agency Homemakers Clubs.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Heyward Taylor Spinks.

She is survived by one son, James (Jim) Heyward Spinks (Renee); one grandson, Taylor Browning Spinks both of Florence, AL; one niece, Melinda Beith (Andy) of Maumelle, AR and one nephew, Ray Spinks of Salem, OR; and many extended family members.

Pallbearers will be Josh Sansing, Brad Minton, Bubba James, Andrew Junkin, Richard Junkin, Roger Minton, David Sansing, and John Mansell.

In lieu of flowers send memorials to Shoals Christian School or The Greater Alabama Council, Boy Scouts of America.
