ATHENS-Athens firefighters and other officials pushed a new Engine No. 1 into the bay at Station No. 1 0n Thursday morning, March 30 as part of Athens Fire and Rescue’s dedication ceremony for the new truck.

The City of Athens purchased the truck and equipment for $517,000 from Sunbelt Fire in Fairhope. The new truck is replacing a 30-year truck that does not have many of today’s required safety features. It has been 10 years since the city purchased a new fire truck.

Chief Bryan Thornton said the new truck meets all the current National Fire Protection Agency standards for safety, equipment and capability.

“It has more room for the equipment we carry today,” Thornton said. “In addition, maintenance was an issue with the 30-year-old truck with it becoming harder each year to find parts to make repairs, and when the parts were available, they were expensive because of their rarity.”

The dedication ceremony also included prayers for safety and recognition of the late Councilman Jimmy Gill who was involved in the first discussions held about financing the truck. Gill died in March 2016 from cancer.
