Ellen Gilley Morgan – Obituary

Ellen Gilley Morgan, 92, a devoted wife, mother and Christian, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 15, 2017. She was born in Holly Pond, Alabama on Oct. 22, 1924.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Morgan, and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gilley, of Holly Pond. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Herman Gilley, of Holly Pond, and Herschel Gilley, of Moulton, and sisters, Buluah Smith and Bessie Carnell, of Holly Pond, Opal Gorham and Corine Tucker, of Cullman, and Irene Lukasik, of Birmingham.

She is survived by her children, Shirley McCain (Clyde), of Birmingham, Charles M. (Chuck) Morgan (Barbara), of Florence, and Jan Gargis (Roger), of Muscle Shoals; grandchildren, Eric McCain (Katy), of Birmingham, Alabama, Jonathan McCain, of Nashville, Tennessee, Amanda Sable (Del), of St. Pete Beach, Florida, Christopher Morgan (Jennifer), of Knoxville, Tennessee, Mary Ellen Towns (Brandon), of Asheville, North Carolina, Morgan Gargis, of Birmingham, Alabama, and Shaw Gargis (Amy), of Atlanta, Georgia; four great-grandsons, Nathan and Matthew McCain and Gresham and Henry Morgan; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Ellen moved with her family from Birmingham to Leighton, Alabama where her husband established a furniture business for many years. She was a faithful member of Leighton Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school and vacation Bible school teacher.

She was a member of the Leighton Civic Club and “Friends of the Leighton Library”. In her later years, she enjoyed playing Mexican dominoes with her close friends.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Del Sable, Brandon Towns, and Kent Gilley.

The family would like to thank the staff at Morningside, Brentwood, and Mitchell-Hollingsworth for their care of Ellen.

Visitation will be Saturday, March 18, 2017, from noon until 2 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home in Tuscumbia, Alabama, with funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Chris Underwood and Mark Mayfield officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the charity of your choice.
