UPDATE: the victim in last night’s train crossing accident is Kevin L England; he was 53 and lived in Antioch TN.

ATHENS-Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson released a statement concerning the death of one person who was killed by a train on Wednesday, March 15:

“This evening (Wednesday, March 15)the police department received a call that a person had been hit by a train, on the train track south of US 72 near the Jefferson Street US 72 intersection.

Athens Fire Department, Athens Limestone Ambulance Service and the police department responded.

When emergency personnel arrived they located a male in his fifties on the west side of the railroad track.  The male had passed away by the time emergency personnel were able to get to him.

A friend of the deceased told investigators they heard the train and saw the light but thought the train was further away than it was. She said they were setting on the track eating when they realized the train was closer than they thought. She said she was able to get out of the way but he was not able to before the train struck him.

The police department received the call at 7:23. At this time I have not been notified that the deceased’s next of kind has been notified. Once thy family has been notified I will be glad to work with the coroner’s office to release that information.

Our investigation into this case will continue. We’re working with the Limestone County Corners office and CSX police.”
