Helen Sharp Austin – Obituary

Helen Sharp Austin, age 82, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, surrounded by her family. She never ceased to smile, loved laughter, and loved Jesus. Helen was a devoted wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. Her cordial, inviting, and ever-serving personality was evident as she served as secretary at Gilbert School and Harlan Elementary School for more than twenty years. Helen also served as secretary at First Baptist Church of Florence for ten years, where she was an active member. She was born and raised in Cloverdale, AL, where she met the love of her life, Glenn David Austin. Glenn and Helen were married for 64 years.

Helen is preceded in death by two sons, Michael Bryan Austin and Glenn David Austin, Jr., her parents, James Dalton and Lila Sharp, and a brother, Harry Lee Sharp. She is survived by her husband, Glenn Austin, son, Bryan (Marcia), and daughter-in-law, Susan Nix. Helen was known as “Murner” to her grandchildren, Bradley Austin, Katie Austin Rinks (Layne), Ashlee Austin, Anna Austin, and Michael Austin (Katie). She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, William and Lillie, her siblings, Bob Sharp, Martha Simmons (Johnny), Rick Sharp (Judy), and many nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Bradley Austin, Michael Austin, Layne Rinks, Harry Austin, Jimmy Austin, and Tommy Simmons.

Visitation will be Friday, March 10, 2017 at Greenview Funeral Home at 12:00 p.m. with funeral to follow at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Officiating will be Kevin Johnson. Burial will follow in Greenview Memorial Park.

The family would like to express special appreciation to Pat Richardson, Violet Grant, and the many compassionate caretakers at Hospice of Tennessee Valley.
