ATHENS-Athens is the seat of a county named for its limestone, and Athens is ready to rock it in an artistic way.

High Cotton Arts artist Roberta Ress is using rocks and art to encourage Limestone County families to explore Athens. Her project is called Athens ROCKS.

On Saturday, March 18, from 2-4 p.m., children will paint rocks at High Cotton Arts and hide them in public places around Athens. Families are encouraged to conduct a scavenger hunt for the rocks and re-hide them.

“When you find a rock, snap a photo of your child or take a selfie and post it to the Athens ROCKS Facebook page,” Ress said. “This is a fun creative activity for kids of all ages.”

As Athens and Limestone County embark on their bicentennial in 2018, Athens ROCKS is a way to encourage families to sightsee in their community.

To register for Athens ROCKS, call High Cotton Arts at 256-232-7717 and leave a message with name and contact information.

Children should bring up to five palm size rocks. Athens Arts League is providing the paint. During the paint session, Ress will read a book called, “Everybody Needs A Rock.”
