Billy Gene Barnes – Obituary

Billy Gene Barnes, 83, died peacefully Friday at his home. Bill was born and raised in Tuscumbia and graduated from Deshler High School in 1952. He attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now known as Auburn University, and obtained a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1956. Bill moved to Huntsville in 1958 and became a leader in the aerospace/defense industry working for Teledyne Brown Engineering and Nichols Research Corporation. He was an active member of First Baptist Church, Huntsville, and served as a Sunday school teacher, Deacon, and Chairman of the Deacons.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Grady Lee Barnes and Inez Willingham Barnes, his brother, Grady Lee Barnes, Jr. and sister Daisy Ruth Bendall. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Best Barnes; his daughters, Lee Barnes Atherton of Birmingham, and husband Robert, Carol Barnes Cox of Huntsville, and husband Randy; and a son, William Alan Barnes of Madison, MS and wife Ginny; six grandchildren, Brett Barnes Smith (Joshua), Logan Barnes Barlow (Beck), Riley Barnes, Emily Atherton, Peyton Cox, and Davis Cox. Bill was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, coworker and friend.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 7, at First Baptist Church Chapel. The funeral service will follow in the chapel with the Rev. Mike Pierce officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to First Baptist Church.
