25th annual Poke Sallet Follies
Thursday-Saturday, March 2-4, 7 p.m., Athens Senior Center
A variety show by the Prime Time Players, comprised of local officials with no talent and others from the community with some talent. A fun night that raises money for the Limestone County Foundation for Aging while spoofing TV shows, songs, movies, local events, and more. Tickets available daily at the Athens Senior Center. Cost is $35 and includes dinner by 306 BBQ.
Athens Renaissance School METL/GEMS program concert
Friday, March 3, 7-10 p.m. at the school
Cost is $10. Get tickets at the Athens Visitor’s Center. Students in these music programs were required to plan and host a concert. The concert will feature Late Evening Crows, Lillian Glanton and BarCODE (members of Toby Keith’s Easy Money Band).
Saturday, March 4, 11:30 a.m., Revival Building on Washington Street
Alabama is kicking off a three-year celebration of the State’s Bicentennial on March 3. Athens and Limestone County, which both are older than state, are joining in the celebration with local events. On March 3, Athens Rotary will host a history program for its members. On March 4, the public is invited to a program presented by Limestone County Archivist Rebekah Davis and Athens State University professor Harry Joiner on the history of the territory for Limestone County.
Learn-to-Read Council 22nd annual Corporate Spell Bee
Saturday, March 4, 10 a.m., Athens High School
Fundraiser for Learn-to-Read. Those interested in having a team can call 256-230-3050. Spectators can attend for free.
KALB and TVA Elk River Cleanup
Saturday, March 4, 8 a.m. to noon
Volunteers meet at Hatchery Road boat launch off Alabama 99. This is an annual event where volunteers clean the river and its shores. Elk River is the water source for the City of Athens and is the river for the Limestone County Canoe and Kayak Trail. Those who want to participate can call Lynne Hart at KALB at 256-233-8000. TVA and KALB will provide trash bags, gloves, litter grabbers, and lunch.
