Book Talk/Signing: The Jemison Cafe: Reflections on an Alabama Boyhood
Sunday, March 12, 2:00 pm
Florence-Lauderdale Public Library

Clara Ruth Holt will visit the library to talk about The Jemison Cafe: Reflections on an Alabama Boyhood, which was written by her late husband John Hayman.

The Jemison Cafe is the true story of a family’s struggle to survive and prosper in an era which spanned the Great Depression, World War II, and their aftermath. The author recalls his experiences, remembers the people, and describes his impressions of growing up in a small Alabama town during this time. John’s parents owned and operated the Jemison Cafe, the community’s social gathering place, and little escaped John’s eyes and ears. His book is an entertaining, informative, and historical account of a bygone era. It explains how life can be good and rewarding even when times and conditions tilt otherwise.

John Hayman was a former college teacher who from 1991 to 1994 directed a study of information technology in African universities for the International Association of Universities. He earned a B.S. degree from the University of Alabama, an M.A. from Syracuse University, and a Ph. D. from Stanford. He was the author of several books and more than sixty articles. He was editor of Teaching and Learning with Computers and served sixteen years as a consulting editor for the Journal of Educational Research. He authored the significant biographies A Judge in the Senate: Howell Heflin’s Career of Politics and Principle and Bitter Harvest: Richmond Flowers and the Civil Rights Revolution.

The Jemison Cafe was published posthumously thanks to the perseverance of Dr. Hayman’s wife. Clara Ruth Holt will talk about the book and have copies available for purchase at this library event. Call 256-764-6564, ext. 28 for more information.
